So its a known fact that dressing alternative becomes near on impossible for people that live further away. Luckily for us goth kids there’s the internet. Which provides us with two fantastic benefits.

- Alternative clothing stores are easy to find online.
To save on buying the wrong sizes and having to spend money returning items. Just contact the seller and ask them for help. after a while, when you become familiar with the sizing of a store it’ll become easier.
#2 Thrift stores
Thrift stores or charity shops, never disappoint. And the fact that you will always get quality and affordable clothes, they should be your go to place to save money on Gothic clothing. Some people shop solely in thrift stores and they still look fly. You will find almost any kind of alternative clothing and accessories you want in these hidden gems. It may take some time and abit of searching but it’s deffinetly worth trying, and it’s allways fun. whether emo, goth, punk, retro, vintage or anything else. Then these stores are your best option.
Most, if not all towns and villages these days have some sort of charity shop or thrift store. If you’re having difficulty locating one in your area, a quick Google search should point you in the right direction.
One of the best parts of wearing alternative clothing is that you can jazz up your stuff, and no one gives a shit. Plus it’s a cheap way to get a little bit more life out of your clothing. A few pins, patches, paint or badges can transform a bog standard peice of clothing, into the most one of a kind custom pieces ever seen. And we all know abit of custom gear is the best way to truly be alternative.
#4 Respond slowly to trends
This is a great strategy for spending less on alternative clothing. When there is a new trend in the market, everyone is rushing to buy whatever the new trend is. Since the demand is high, prices will tend to be high so, try to avoid buying trending outfits. You can buy alternative clothing thats not trending but still look great. Moreover, you may not like everything that is trending but if you have to follow any fashion trend, then respond slowly to them by waiting for a while until the hype dies down.
#5 Bring a friend
Taking a friend with you every time you are going shopping can be a great way to spend your money wisely. If you are a spendthrift person and feel like you spend more than you should when shopping, then it will be a good idea to take a friend with you. Only bring a friend who is not as extravagant as you are because if you do, you may end up spending even more. Sometimes you may end up in expensive stores so, bring someone who will help you to shop wisely.
#6 Seasonal discounts
Everybody knows about the January sales and black Friday discounts in November. But do you know, retailers like to thin out their stock coming upto a new season. That also means discounts, clothing stores on the high Street don’t want a shop full of big thick coats in summer. Or shorts in the winter, so keep that in mind and be ready to pounce on the quality alternative clothing. When the current seasons coming to an end.
#7 Cart abandonment
This doesn’t mean stealing a shopping cart from the local supermarket and throwing it the nearest canal. No no no, this is for your online shopping carts. #9 Sell your old stuff.
The circle of life, you want money for clothes. So sell your old clothes to someone looking to buy clothes. You’re not the only one looking to save money on Gothic clothing alternative clothing. But you do own alternative and gothic clothing, and may have either. Fallen out of love with or grown out of, some of your clothes. Someone out there wants it so get a couple of quid by selling it to them. EBay is the most well known online market for this but there’s others. Like shpock or depop.
#10 Market Barter.
Never buy something for full price from a market stall. They can be expensive and the usual reason for this is because, they expect to be bartered down in price. Don’t be afraid to barter but don’t expect massive discounts either. A few pounds saved is nice tho.
Get together with some like minded people or friends and spend an evening having your own swap shop together. We all buy things then fall out of love with them. Or just generally don’t wear often, so if selling your old clothes isn’t for you. Try swapping them with friends.
#12 Practice appropriate clothes care
Take care of your clothes and they’ll take care of your bank account. If your clothes are worth your money then they should be worth looking after. Simple things like washing whites with whites and colours with coulurs, will help your clothes last longer. Take time to read the label and wash clothes how the manufacturer recommends.
#13 Stock your clothing
Most people overlook this and end up with far too many of one particular type of clothing. Do you really need 10 pairs of jeans? Do all of them even fit?
A good way to buying alternative clothing on a budget, is to know what you have and what you need. The old ‘needs vs wants’ debacle. Pick a number your happy with and stick with it, for this example we’ll pick 7. So you’ll now own, 7 Tshirts, 7 trousers and 7 dresses etc. They’re all going to be quality items because you’ve been following the tips in this article. You know your 7 items of each type are going to last you a good while. But when the day comes that one of these items needs replacing you’ll be ready, you’ll know what you NEED to buy. This will give you time to look around and choose another peice of quality clothing, instead of having to rush out and grab the cheapest item in a hurry.
#14 10 for 10 or 1 for 100
A top tip to buying alternative clothing on a budget is, don’t waste your money on the cheap stuff. Yes in the short term you’ll be saving. But think long term, is it better to buy a cheap £10 pair of boots, that won’t last long at all. You’ll not get much wear out of them, so they’ll need replacing. Over and over and over again, so in the long run no, it’s not cheaper. Go for the pair of demonia or whatever it is you have your eye on, save your money and buy them. Don’t waste £100 on 10 pairs of cheap boots that have ended up in the bin. Just wait a little while and buy a decent pair of killer boots, That will last forever.
#15 Shop the classics
No this doesn’t mean buy retro or vintage, although they are very nice a classic peice of quality alternative clothing can be a decent coat or jeans. Something that will last the test of time, a staple peice to your wardrobe. the peice of clothing that you can build your style around. These items are the pieces that are worth that extra bit of money. Like a leather jacket or trench coat, they’ll last forever. So take your time on these pieces and make the investment carefully.
#16 Cut back
Try save some money elsewhere, do you need that takeaway? Or all the TV subscriptions? Probably not. Just cutting back on this can save save you hundreds a month, which can the be put into quality alternative clothing that will last you a long time.
